What is a varicose vein?
A varicose vein represents an abnormal vein in the body that no longer has the ability to efficiently transfer blood from lower leg to the upper leg. When this problem occurs as a result of dysfunctional valves in normal veins, the elastic collagen in the vein wall begins to deteriorate and ultimately cause dilation and bulging of an otherwise normal vein. When this occurs over and over again in the legs, varicose veins begin to disrupt the normal channels of the circulatory system causing the blood to stagnate in the lower legs. Patients who have varicose veins either see large bulging veins in the legs or begin to develop leg pain discomfort as a result of the stagnant blood that is pooling in the legs and ankles.

Risk factors for varicose veins
Sometimes varicose veins can occur on their own, but an astute vein surgeon can help you determine your risk factors for varicose veins in spider veins that occur in adulthood. Age is a single risk factor for varicose veins and men and women both recognize larger and more prominent varicose veins with advanced age. Women are more likely to develop varicose veins during pregnancy, pre-and post-menstruation, menopause, use of hormonal contraceptives, and hormone replacement. Childbirth is a very important risk factor for varicose veins and women often note larger and more prominent varicose veins during pregnancy and immediately after childbirth and breast-feeding. Another risk factor is obesity, standing or sitting for long periods of time, poor circulation, trauma to the legs including surgery and or mechanical trauma to the skin and soft tissue. Family history is an important risk factor and adults will note that they may have other older relatives who have developed varicose veins and or the complications associated with varicose veins. It's important to know that risk factors can sometimes be improved but genetic factors may predispose you to the development of lifelong varicose veins. It's still very important for patients with abundant risk factors for spider and varicose veins to be treated early in life so they don't develop circulatory compromise as adults.
