In most cases, visible moles on the face are no cause for concern as these are usually benign and age related. If you have an extensive history of sun damage or have a family history of skin cancer, more attention should be placed to newly appearing moles on the skin. The wound is gently cauterized and a bandage is placed for several days while the wound heals and the skin is replaced with new skin. These procedures typically leave  minor to absent scars on the skin. If a mole requires biopsy a surgical incision is used to excise the mole and some of the surrounding skin. This technique may require sutures to close the wound and depending on the size of the lesion may leave little to no scar.
